Cartier celebrates its history and design with various iterations of its pioneering timepieces. The Cartier Santos Demoiselle is one such example – it takes the perfect geometry of the Santos-Dumont watch, and the sensuous silhouette of the Panthére, to create a watch that’s both practical and elegant.
Banking on the success of the Cartier Santos, the French maison thought of introducing a smaller counterpart that would suit women’s wrists. While keeping the squarish shape of the Santos, it did away with the exposed screws and left only elegant features, from the polished case to the sinuous bracelet. Indeed, the name Demoiselle suits the collection. Not only is it named after the featherweight aircrafts designed by Alberto Santos-Dumont, it is also a common name in French for the delicate damselfly.
Understated, reliable, and feminine all at the same time, the Santos Demoiselle is a stripped-back expression of the all-time classic pilot’s watch from Cartier – perfect for the lady who seeks to own an iconic timepiece. Cartier is responsible for many of the world’s emblematic timepieces, most famous of all being the Cartier Santos and the Cartier Tank. The French Maison has kept up with the times by making reverential iterations of their original designs, which in themselves have become much beloved models.
The story of the Cartier Santos watch is well-known, but worth telling still. In 1904, the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont asked Louis Cartier, then head designer of the house, for a watch that could be read easily while in flight. The talented and exploratory Louis designed a square watch with rounded corners for easier reading, and meant for it to be strapped onto the wrist while the wearer was navigating the skies. In 1911, the Cartier Santos-Dumont went on sale to the public, and the rest is history.
The Cartier Santos would be a main offering of the brand, with various iterations being created through the decades. There’s the Santos Galbee which expresses the pomp of the 1980s, and the Santos 100 which boasts an ultra-masculine look so in vogue in the 2000s. By 2012, Cartier presented a version of the Santos that’s made especially for the ladies – the Santos Demoiselle.
The new model takes the geometric shape of the original Santos in a smaller size, and offers a more subdued form without the exposed screws. It is paired with a lithe and supple bracelet that wears like jewelry, much like the one seen on the Cartier Panthére.
Over the course of its production, the Cartier Santos Demoiselle was offered in various metals – from stainless steel, to 18k yellow, rose, and white gold. Patrons had a choice between two sizes: a small case measuring 20 x 20 mm, and a midsize version measuring 26 x 26 mm. Adding to the elegance of the Santos Demoiselle are the options of diamonds on the bezel and mother of pearl dials.
At the heart of the Cartier Santos Demoiselle are always accurate quartz movements, making them reliable pieces for all occasion wear.
All Cartier models have a reference number, which is used to properly document their manufacture and sale. These are randomly assigned and are composed of 8 characters, which usually begin with a letter, followed by an alpha-numeric combination.

The Cartier Santos Demoiselle is a subdued take on the iconic Santos pilot’s watch, made especially for the ladies. Here are the most frequently asked questions about the Cartier Santos Demoiselle.
The Santos Demoiselle is a ladies watch design from Cartier. It is inspired by the Cartier Santos pilot’s watch first introduced to the public in 1911.
The Santos Demoiselle comes in a square case with rounded edges just like the Santos, but the design does away with the signature exposed screws. The dial is classic Cartier with Roman numerals and blued steel hands. It comes with a five link bracelet, and octagonal diamond-set crown which add overall elegance to the design.
Cartier Santos Demoiselle models, like most of Cartier’s dress watches, are water resistant to 30 meters or 100 feet.
With this depth rating, the watch can be worn daily and still have enough protection from splashes (such as when washing hands) but they are not suited for long-term exposure to water, such as during water sports or swimming.
As of 2022, the Cartier Santos Demoiselle no longer appears on the Cartier website. However, fans of the design can still find them in the secondary market. Explore our collecton of Cartier Santos Demoiselle watches here.
